We curate progress.

Founder · Matt

Hi, I'm Matt — founder of Smile Press.

I built Smile Press because I got tired of finishing the morning news feeling worse than when I started. Not because reality is bad — reality is genuinely improving in dozens of ways — but because the incentives of modern media push toward fear, outrage, and anxiety.

Smile Press is my answer: a reader-funded, ad-free platform where every story has been deliberately chosen and reframed to reflect the truth — including the parts that give you reason to keep going.

The goal

The goal is simple: give you a reason to stay informed without destroying your sense of what's possible. Real progress is happening everywhere — in science, medicine, energy, design, education, and sport. But it rarely makes the front page, because calm, gradual improvement doesn't drive clicks.

We don't hide bad news. We don't pretend the world is perfect. We apply an editorial filter that asks: "Is this story honest? Does it illuminate something useful? Does it leave the reader better equipped than before?" If yes, it's here. If no, it's not.

The platform is funded by readers — $4.99/month, no ads, no data sales, no dark patterns. Your subscription is literally what makes this work.

What we believe

  • Attention is a resource. We try not to waste yours.
  • Facts matter. Framing matters just as much.
  • Progress is real, and it deserves to be reported carefully.
  • Slow, verified, well-sourced news is better than fast, loud news.
  • You can be informed without being anxious.

How we work

Our editorial method

Every story in Smile Press goes through a deliberate four-step process: broad ingestion, AI-assisted filtering, editorial rewriting, and human review.
